Myanmar is a vast country that retains a greater parts of its traditional values, culture and natural environment. The people are deeply religious and generally live in harmony with each other. The country is divided into seven states and seven regions. The seven states are Kachin, Kayah, Kayin, Chin, Mon Rakhine and Shan. The seven regions ( formerly known as divisions ) are Mandalay, Sagaing, Bago, Magway, Ayeyarwaddy, Tanintharyi and Yangon. Among the country’s many amazing sites are the spectacular Shwedagon Pagoda, the magnificent ancient temples at Bagan, the grand carved teak monasteries of Mandalay, the centuries old pagodas in Shan State, the magical Golden Rock Pagoda poised on the edge of a soaring cliff and the massive stone temples at Mrauk-U. For nature lovers, hikers and divers, there are places of awesome beauty. They include forest reserves, pristine beaches lapped by clear blue seas, snow-capped mountains, wooded hills and lush valleys, the thousand islands dotting the azure waters of the Myeik archipelago and white-water rivers for rafting.
The real treasures are the people who live with strong traditional values. The way of life for most of the population is based upon the teachings of Theravada Buddhism, which places an emphasis on harmonious living.
“ MYANMAR COUNTRY” The earliest written record of the name of the country: 1235 CE. The words ‘Myanmar Pyay’ are inscribed on a stone inscription dated 597 ME { Myanmar Era } or 1235 CE. The stone is from the reign of Kya Swar, { 1234-1250 } son of King Htilo Minlo { Nadaung Mya Min}, Bagan.
It is known as the Yadana Kon Htan Inscription, listed under the name of the official who had it made to record a donation . It was written in the early Burmese script with letters somewhat square in shape. It is in Bagan in the collection of the Archaeological Department. The front of this 3ft-high stone is damaged. The reverse side, better protected from the elements, has on the first line of the inscription the two words ‘ Myanmar Pyay’ which means Myanmar Country.
